Substance Use disorder treatment

Substance Abuse Treatment: Finding the Right Path

When it comes to substance use and addiction, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Fortunately, there are many options for help—but with so many choices, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. That’s where The Hope Center comes in. We’re here to help you navigate the process, whether that means finding local recovery groups and organizations, or understanding the different levels of treatment available and when each is appropriate.

In some situations, an individual may require immediate medical attention. If someone is unresponsive or experiencing a medical emergency, calling 911 is the safest and most appropriate action.

If you’re unsure where to begin, we can help. Read below to learn more about the various levels of care available to residents in Norfolk County.

Navigating Substance Use Disorder Treatment

Detox

Detox is a medically supervised process that helps individuals safely withdraw from substances in a supportive environment. For substances like alcohol and benzodiazepines, withdrawal can come with serious health risks, which is why professional monitoring is so important. Detox provides a safe foundation for beginning the next steps in treatment and recovery.

CSS – Clinically Managed High-Intensity Residential Services

  • What it is: A short-term, structured residential treatment program for individuals who need 24-hour support but don’t require medical detox.

  • Focus: Stabilization, clinical services (like counseling and group therapy), and preparation for ongoing treatment.

  • Ideal for: People who are medically stable but need a high level of structure and support early in recovery.

TSS – Transitional Support Services

  • What it is: A bridge program for individuals who have completed detox or CSS but are waiting for a longer-term placement (like residential treatment or sober living).

  • Focus: Continued stabilization, support, and case management to prevent relapse while transitioning to the next level of care.

  • Ideal for: People who are no longer in crisis but not yet ready or able to move into the next phase of recovery.

Halfway House

  • What it is: A transitional residential program for people in early recovery, often following detox or inpatient treatment.

  • Structure: Highly structured—residents may have curfews, required meetings, random drug testing, and be expected to follow a treatment plan.

  • Funding: Often state-funded or affiliated with treatment centers or the criminal justice system.

  • Length of Stay: Typically short-term (a few months), with a focus on stabilization and preparing for independence or the next level of care.

  • Who it's for: Individuals needing continued support and supervision after more intensive treatment.

Sober Living

  • What it is: A supportive, substance-free living environment for people in recovery—sometimes called a recovery home.

  • Structure: Less clinical, but still includes house rules, peer accountability, and often requirements like 12-step meeting attendance or curfews.

  • Funding: Usually privately paid; may be self-run or owned by individuals or recovery-focused organizations.

  • Length of Stay: More flexible—residents can often stay as long as they need, provided they follow house rules and remain sober.

  • Who it's for: Individuals who are stable in recovery and seeking a safe, sober environment as they rebuild their lives.
